My Family Medicine rotation at CitiMed JFK was interesting and educational and I was able to learn a lot. I think it was a good rotation to end with. The patients that we saw were different from my previous rotations as we mainly saw workers comp, no fault, and DOT physicals. I spent majority of the rotation working exclusively with 1 provider, only a handful of days were spent with other providers. We spent a lot of time coordinating care for the patients’ various injuries and making sure they were getting physical therapy and seeing any necessary specialists as well as their PCP. I was able to get useful feedback from the provider I was working with and apply that information to subsequent patients. Working with predominantly 1 provider allowed for trust to be established and for me to see patients with more autonomy, this provided me with the opportunity to grow as a clinician and hopefully prepared me for when I am working as a provider.
I was trusted to take histories, examine, evaluate, and form plans for patients. While there were fewer procedures during this rotation, I believe that I was able to greatly improve my physical exam skills, particularly the musculoskeletal exam. I was able to interpret ECGs and x-rays. There were some procedures such as splinting, fluorescein staining, IM injections, PPD placement. The provider I was with provided insight from their experience to teach me how to optimally perform these procedures.
I am proud to say that after 9 rotations I feel ready to take on the responsibilities of a Physician Assistant and I look forward to the challenges ahead throughout my career. I know I will have to constantly refine my abilities and skills and medical knowledge.
